COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Washington Regional Alcohol Program announced that free Lyft rides will be offered during Super Bowl weekend to help reduce impaired driving. The service will run from 8pm Sunday, Feb. 8 to 4 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9 across Montgomery & Prince George’s counties, DC and Northern Virginia.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Amazon announced Tuesday that it will close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores nationwide by this Sunday, Feb. 1; the closures include the Gaithersburg location as the company shifts focus to Whole Foods Market and online grocery delivery.  The MoCo Show
  • Guapo’s Taqueria and Charcoal Chicken will open in April at the former California Tortilla site (12211 Darnestown Road) and introduce a fast-casual menu featuring rotisserie charcoal chicken, tacos, burritos, and Latin American sides to locals.  The MoCo Show
  • Steeze Burger will open its first brick and mortar location at 12141 Darnestown Road in the Shops at Potomac Valley, Gaithersburg after a liquor license hearing before Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services on Thursday, Feb. 19. Founded by Laytonsville resident Hunter Karametos, the popular pop-up targets a Spring 2026 opening.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools reported a 91.85% graduation rate for the school year ended in 2024, while the 2025 adjusted cohort recorded an 88.77% rate – officials say this decline highlights rising challenges for multilingual learners.  Montgomery Community Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Environmental testing found E. coli levels nearly 12,000 times safe limits in the Potomac River after a collapsed sewer line released 300 million gallons of sewage in Montgomery County. DC Water crews have activated a temporary bypass system with industrial pumps+are installing more pumps as they work to fully contain the overflow.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WSSC Water is urging 1.9 million customers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties to limit water use for essentials only today as extreme cold and heavy snowfall have led to 33 reported breaks in a 1,000 square mile service area (customers should report leaks to help crews keep water pressure stable).  The MoCo Show
  • County officials said that 500 pieces of equipment cleared 1,100 lane miles of major roads Monday and RideOn buses ran at 75% service while trash pickup will resume Tuesday with a shifted trash day; they also increased shelter beds for unsheltered residents from 346 to 610.  Montgomery Community Media
