BUSINESS NEWS

  • McDonald’s at 7200 Muncaster Mill Road in the Red Mill Shops will permanently close on March 15, ending a long chapter in Derwood. Local residents are organizing a meet-up to share memories before the location shuts down.  The MoCo Show
  • Glenmont McDonald’s will expand its drive-thru by adding new menu boards, canopies, and upgraded ordering microphones to reduce wait times at this historic two-story location. The project will improve service during peak hours.  The MoCo Show
  • Advance Auto Parts has secured a $1.79M permit to begin interior construction at its upcoming White Oak location at White Oak Town Center. The store is listed as an incoming tenant as part of the company’s expansion in Montgomery County, though an opening date has not been announced yet.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gaithersburg’s Black History Month exhibit honoring Maryland’s Black heroes features interactive displays (as reported by FOX 5’s Gwen Tolbart) and is open throughout February.  FOX 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Libraries hosts a free Winter Reading Marathon through February that challenges residents to read 26.2 hours to beat the winter slowdown, with options to track progress online, by a librarian, & using a printed bookmark available for children and adults.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Public Schools say buildings are ready to reopen, but snowbanks and parked cars blocked sidewalks and roads Monday (preventing safe bus routes). The county plans to open schools on Tuesday if cleanup improves and asks families to report uncleared streets via 311.  FOX 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WSSC Water said the salt used to clear roads during a recent snowstorm may cause tap water to taste slightly saltier in the coming weeks. The water remains safe to drink but people on sodium-restricted diets should be mindful as rising salt levels have been tracked over 30 years.  WTOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Department of Transportation is hosting its annual contest inviting high school students to create 30-second videos promoting road safety; entries (English or Spanish) are due by Saturday, Feb. 28, and winners will earn prizes up to $800 and feature on MDOT Safe Routes to School website.  The MoCo Show
  • On Monday, Feb. 2, WSSC lifted the essential-water-use-only request at 1:20 p.m. for 1.9 million customers in Montgomery & Prince George’s counties, citing stabilized demand and normalized water storage levels while its filtration plants continue operating normally.  The MoCo Show

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Koi Sushi is now open at Rio Lakefront, offering contemporary Japanese dining with an expansive sushi menu and handcrafted cocktails that add to the mixed-use destination’s lively food scene. The restaurant hosts a late-night club experience every Saturday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. (free admission).  The MoCo Show

  • Montgomery County natives Stefon Diggs from Gaithersburg and Mack Hollins from Rockville will boost the Patriots as they prepare for Super Bowl LX on Sunday in Santa Clara.
