  • The Montgomery County Humane Society warned residents in Derwood about a scam — callers falsely claim to represent MCHS or Hanna’s Clinic, say they have treated lost pets, and demand payment before releasing the animals.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Libraries is set to celebrate MoComCon’s 10th anniversary this March with a free, two-day event featuring panels, cosplay contests, and art competitions at Germantown Library (and adjoining BlackRock Center for the Arts) starting Friday, March 20 for adults and Saturday, March 21 for family activities.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Department of Transportation is running the Heads Up, Phones Down video contest for high school students through Saturday, Feb. 28. Contestants can win prizes like a MacBook Air + Apple Watch and may earn Service Learning hours by creating a 30-second video on safe, phone-free driving and walking.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Councilmembers criticized MCPS for planning to use Eid al-Fitr as a make-up day for weather closures. They said the move (which they believe hurts inclusion) puts Muslim students in a hard spot and urged school leaders to choose another day.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery Parks is seeking public input on park restroom access through an online survey open now through April 19 & county planners will use the feedback to guide future facility improvements.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County launched the Look Before You Book campaign to help residents choose licensed massage providers and report suspicious businesses (the initiative runs through June) and support safe practices. County officials say the effort aims to curb illegal operations and prevent labor exploitation.  The MoCo Show
  • Council President Natali Fani-González met with county officials Tuesday to review snow removal challenges following the Jan. 24 storm. MCPS officials stressed they focused on school safety while MCDOT managed roads & sidewalks, a division that sparked debate among county leaders.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Extreme cold and wind warnings include north-central Maryland from 4 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday with dangerous wind chills and gusts up to 60 mph & risks of power outages and hazardous travel conditions.  The MoCo Show

  • Flower Hill Elementary in Gaithersburg shared a throwback yearbook photo of local native Stefon Diggs as he prepares for his Super Bowl appearance tomorrow, Feb. 8; the tribute marks his journey from the classroom to the NFL.  The MoCo Show
  • Maryland athletes with strong local ties will represent Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina and Paralympics, with events Feb. 6-22 and March 6-15; competitors include a Laurel bobsledder, a Bethesda former swimmer turned bobsledder, a Baltimore luge veteran, and Frederick skeleton and para ice hockey riders.  The MoCo Show
