- ➤ Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center in Derwood is hosting a reduced-fee adoption event for dogs over 40 pounds on Feb. 14-15 to help find homes for nearly 80 big dogs. Fees are set (under six months $75, 6 months and older $50, seniors $37.50). The MoCo Show

- ➤ Signage is up for Tropical Smoothie Cafe at Wintergreen Plaza in Rockville, replacing the former Capital Cryo space at 835 Rockville Pike, Suite F + Cold Stone Creamery, Great Clips and ACE Hardware are also set to open in nearby spaces; the cafe's opening date is pending. The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Antisemitic graffiti was discovered on the synagogue sign at the Olney synagogue Tuesday morning, and Montgomery County police launched an investigation while Rabbi Jonah Layman said community members have offered to help replace the defaced signs. WTOP
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Elementary students took part in a Block Kids Building Competition at Thomas Edison High School of Technology in Silver Spring on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Montgomery County Public Schools Foundations Office partnered with construction groups (the National Association of Women in Construction and the Construction Trades Foundation) to give hands-on learning, and the local winner will advance to the regional round. FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ Maryland income tax returns for the 2025 filing year will be due April 15, 2026. Taxpayers may file electronically via the Maryland Tax Connect portal (for faster refunds) or request an extension but must pay any owed taxes by the deadline to avoid penalties. FOX 5

- ➤ Council President Natali Fani-González has asked the state Board of Education to grant a waiver so MCPS may observe Eid al-Fitr as a non-instructional day on March 20 — a request supported by several councilmembers who say it will ease scheduling conflicts for families.
