CULTURE NEWS

  • Sherwood High School’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival returns for its 54th show, a live music event that has drawn thousands since 1971 (excluding a 2020 virtual performance). Tickets remain available for those who want to join the celebration.  The MoCo Show

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Wes Moore announced that PJM Interconnection extended its capacity market price cap (through the end of the decade) to limit electricity rate hikes for Marylanders as state energy officials plan amendments with FERC to support measures addressing rising demand and affordability.  The MoCo Show
  • Gaithersburg residents can buy energy-efficient appliances tax-free during Shop Maryland Energy Weekend Feb. 14-16, saving on items like air conditioners, washers-dryers, and even some lightbulbs; online orders must be charged during the sale to qualify.  WTOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County public schools are expanding summer school — adding more locations and extended hours. Six high schools will offer credit courses from July 7 through July 21 and July 23 through Aug. 6 while six middle schools host a project based academy with meals and transportation; registration opens March 9.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery Blair High School junior Rishik Shenolikar launched Potomac PiRates Inc.—a nonprofit that helps local elementary students overcome math anxiety with puzzles and games—and partners with the Montgomery County Recreation Center, sending nearly 1,000 math kits and planning to travel to Africa this summer for tutoring support.  WTOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Council introduced Bill 7-26 to ease regulations for local farms by clarifying allowed agricultural activities (including processing and administration) to support family operations. A public hearing is set for March 10 at 1:30 p.m. at the Council Office Building.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services will present a $95,224.83 check from its Labor of Love campaign to March of Dimes at its Olney store on Wednesday, Feb. 18 (customer and corporate donations totaled over $110,000) with public tours available at the March of Dimes Mobile Health Bus.  The MoCo Show
  • Presidents Day on Feb. 16 means changes in regional hours as Montgomery County offices and libraries will be closed, and banks, DMV and USPS will not operate while metro and trash collection run on holiday schedules. Gaithersburg residents should plan ahead for these service adjustments.  WTOP
  • Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown said his office criticized the EPA’s final rule that rescinded the 2009 Endangerment Finding linking vehicle emissions to climate change and public health risks. Brown said his office would continue exploring legal options to protect environmental regulations.  The MoCo Show

  • WRS Inc. confirmed that three tenants—Home Depot with nearly 140,000 sqft, Sprouts with 23,000 sqft and Landmark Theatre with 15,000 sqft—signed on for Lakeforest Redevelopment in Gaithersburg, setting the stage for residential construction above new retail near Montgomery Village and Lost Knife Road.  The MoCo Show
