BUSINESS NEWS

  • McDonald’s in Derwood is set to close permanently on March 15, with signage now being removed at 7200 Muncaster Mill Road and the site listed as a 3,600 sqft freestanding pad with a drive-thru — local resident Irene Johnson shared footage and invited neighbors for a final meet-up.  The MoCo Show
  • Granite Canyon Partners acquired The Grove shopping center in Derwood for $17.4 million on Feb. 24. The 95,000 sqft center houses tenants including Giant, McDonald's, Feasty Crab and an Exxon station and will continue its current operations with no major changes planned.  The MoCo Show
  • Fine Wine, a longstanding specialty wine shop at 20 Grand Corner Ave. in Gaithersburg, closed Tuesday, Feb. 24; the retailer was known for its wide selection of domestic and international wines, tastings, wine classes and community events while remaining inventory is now on auction online.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a Feb. 7 gala at the DoubleTree Hotel Gaithersburg, Nicole Chang (a junior at Walter Johnson High) received PRO’s first Rising Star Award for her performance at a local competition. PRO plans to offer an annual $1,000 award and scholarships to support future students.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services and the Keeping It Safe Coalition are hosting two student contests to promote alcohol-free prom celebrations — high school juniors and seniors submit essays while middle and high school teams submit 30-second videos by March 31 with winners celebrated at a spring awards reception.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on I-270 northbound in Montgomery and Frederick counties will see new metered ramps on 16 entrance ramps operating daily from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.—a system MDOT says could cut morning commutes by up to 30 minutes.  WTOP
  • Montgomery County residents held a public hearing Tuesday to share concerns about data centers impacting energy costs, health, and the environment — prompting council consideration to limit their locations. Council President Natali Fani-Gonzalez said work sessions to adjust the proposals are scheduled for summer.  FOX 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • After a Jan. 19 pipeline collapse released millions of gallons of untreated sewage into the Potomac, officials confirm drinking water is safe but advise against river contact due to high bacteria levels; DC Water will host a public meeting tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda while repair & restoration work continues.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Montgomery County is buzzing with new dining openings that include two local debut spots in Gaithersburg. HomMali Thai Dining now serves Thai flavors and cocktails at Quince Orchard Plaza (near Quincy’s) while Monkey’s Matcha offers ceremonial matcha drinks at Gaithersburg Square (service 12pm–7pm, except Tuesdays).  The MoCo Show
  • The Baked Bear at Pike & Rose will host a Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 12pm to 6pm. Every in-store customer can get a free ice cream scoop and pay for an upgrade to a full ice cream sandwich at 929 Rose Ave.  The MoCo Show
