BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Construction continues at the future Sheetz site at Walnut Hill Shopping Center — 16529 South Frederick Avenue — with progress on the 4,959sqft building and fuel station pointing to a potential opening later this year in Gaithersburg. The project began in December. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Minerva Indian Cuisine at 16240 Frederick Rd is temporarily closed while it renovates its kitchen equipment; the restaurant has not set a reopening date and local diners await its return. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Grandma’s Ice Cream and Waffles in Rockville has temporarily closed and its owner is exploring reopening with a new concept based on Grandma’s homemade cooking (by the same team behind Grandma Kona’s Kona Ice in Gaithersburg and Germantown, now celebrating 14 years). The MoCo Show
- ➤ Me Land Gaithersburg, an indoor play center (831 Russell Avenue), will close on April 14 with its final day on April 13. The business, which opened in September 2022 in the former OmniFun space, thanked families for their support and noted its Frederick location will stay open. The MoCo Show
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools marked the 25th anniversary of a Nextel pilot at Walter Johnson High that equipped 70 staff to handle construction challenges and communicate with parents — a move that laid the groundwork for today’s smart communication methods. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Montgomery County Board of Education approved sweeping school boundary and program changes on March 26 for the 2027-2028 school year. The plan will reopen Woodward High, expand Northwood and Damascus High Schools, and relocate Wootton High to Crown Farm — actions aimed to balance enrollment and improve access for students. - ➤ MCDOT announced winners for its 2026 Heads Up, Phones Down teen video contest to promote distraction-free travel. Nearly 100 entries were received and Julian Szell of John F. - ➤ Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced a second round of $700 no-interest loans (for federal workers affected by the shutdown) on March 26. The Maryland Department of Labor's program has distributed $35,000 in loans and expanded online tools for those working without pay. The MoCo Show
