- ➤ The Spring Makers Market will return May 3 and 4 at Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront on Grand Corner Avenue from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine, and it will feature handmade items by local artisans, live music, food from BurgerFi and True Food Kitchen, and a patch bar where visitors may design a custom tote bag (a free tote is given with a $50 purchase at Rio shops while supplies last). - ➤ Montgomery County’s Sweet Release program teaches inmates how to bake at its Pre-Release Center in North Bethesda — the eight-week course offers certification and job skills as several graduates secure local bakery positions. WTOP
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Raphael Mayorga, 21, was found guilty on 13 charges including second-degree assault for striking Sgt. Patrick Kepp, who lost his legs in a high-speed collision on Route 270 in October, and he will be sentenced on Aug. 27 — county and state officials expressed disappointment with the verdict while noting that Sgt. Kepp has returned to duty and now trains fellow officers. Montgomery Community Media
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Maryland, Montgomery County and Poolesville officials have offered $3 million to get White’s Ferry and Rockland Farm to sign a binding agreement by July 1 for reopening the historic Potomac River crossing closed since December, 2020—this incentive aims to restore a link that once carried up to 800 vehicles daily. If the deal is made, the funds may cover property rights or equipment purchase to restart the ferry service. The MoCo Show
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services released the updated Health in Montgomery County 2013-2022 report, which shows that while many health measures are better than state and national averages, Black and Hispanic communities still face more challenges—county leaders say the data will guide programs to improve access and care.
