- ➤ Häagen-Dazs opened yesterday at 211 Market St W in Gaithersburg in the space that previously housed Bel Pre Family Dental in Kentlands—permanent signage is not yet installed and a grand opening celebration is planned for later this spring. The MoCo Show
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Maryland READS said 67% of fourth and eighth grade students still cannot read at grade level even though education spending grew 37%. Fourth grade scores improved a little from 2022 — but eighth grade results stayed the same and experts say technology may be a barrier. WTOP
- ➤ Montgomery College will host a national premiere on April 28 to introduce a new curriculum that trains faculty to support student parents. The event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Parilla Performing Arts Center on the Rockville Campus and will include opening remarks, a panel discussion, a video preview, and a networking reception under its title Care & Curriculum: Spotlight on Student Parents — From Insight to Impact. - ➤ Our Lady of Good Counsel (17301 Old Vic Blvd in Olney) announced on Tuesday that former MCPS principal Edward Owusu has been named the next high school principal; he will officially begin his role on July 1 and guide the school as a Good Counsel alumnus (Class of 1989). The MoCo Show

- ➤ Montgomery County Councilmember Natali Fani-González will host the United in Service virtual community meeting on April 23 at 11:30 a.m. via Zoom — the webinar will focus on business support and opportunities for federal workers and county residents and will feature guest speakers Judy Costello and Martha Jimenez with simultaneous Spanish interpretation and live broadcast on County Cable Montgomery and YouTube. - ➤ Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman delivered his State of the City address last Thursday at the Rosborough Cultural Arts and Wellness Center — he stressed strong community values, a high municipal equality score, and challenges from state and federal actions like proposed tax increases. - ➤ Montgomery Parks received $5 million in state capital funding during the legislative session to renovate five parks and playgrounds across Montgomery County—Director Miti Figueredo said the money includes a $3 million grant for the Wheaton Action Sports Park and helps address a $2 million cut for Wheaton Regional Park.
