- ➤ Goodwill leased the space at 58 Market St. in Kentlands to create a Donation Express center that will accept household goods, apparel, electronics, and housewares—some items like books might be available for sale. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 16th Gaithersburg Book Festival will take place on May 17 at Bohrer Park with free, day-long events that include workshops for teens, adults, and children, a poetry contest, and a special Children's Village with over 40 authors. The schedule includes sessions starting at 10 a.m.—covering topics from healing through writing to crafting nonfiction proposals—and offers art and storytelling workshops for various age groups. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Maryland Governor Wes Moore and four other governors sent a letter opposing a CMS rule that would stop states from setting their own health insurance standards — they say it would confuse customers and hurt low-income families — and asked the CMS boss to cancel the rule. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown and 20 other states filed an amicus brief on April 16 to support a lawsuit that seeks to block Acting SSA Administrator Leland Dudek and a Musk-backed agency from making layoffs and office closures that jeopardize Social Security payments for millions — including 375,000 Maryland seniors. - ➤ Crews from Quantum Corporation are installing underground fiber optic cables along I-270 from the Montgomery County line north of MD 109 to I-70; a lane on northbound is closed overnight between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.—after finishing that stretch, crews will switch to southbound work, and the 10-mile project is expected to last two months.
