BUSINESS NEWS

  • Award-winning sushi restaurant Uchi will expand to Bethesda with a new Uchiko location in a 9,000 SF space on Wisconsin Ave—transformed from a former steakhouse. Chef Tyson Cole's Hai Hospitality will debut the restaurant late 2025.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County police arrested 23-year-old Damonne Antonio Shayne Martin from Silver Spring in connection with a shooting at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Wheaton on April 7, when he fired rounds at the store; officers arrested him on April 15—he was found with a loaded gun and suspected cocaine.  The MoCo Show
  • Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police—Special Victims Investigations Division are asking the public to help locate 17-year-old Jennifer Orellana Ventura, last seen on April 16 in the 1600 block of Northcrest Drive in Colesville and described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 100 lbs with brown eyes and black hair.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Wes Moore announced a new process to help displaced federal workers apply for state jobs in human resources, procurement, accounting, and fiscal services with one application. The Maryland Department of Budget Management will manage applications, which will remain open until May 2nd to speed up hiring.  The MoCo Show
  • Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen confirmed Kilmar Abrego Garcia is alive after meeting him Thursday evening in El Salvador — the senator released photos of their meeting as he continues efforts to secure Garcia's release.  FOX 5
  • On April 18th, Chuck and Stacy Kuhn offered to donate the White’s Ferry business and assets valued at $4.5 million to Loudoun County to help reopen the historic Potomac River crossing after Montgomery County declined a similar offer. The county is now considering the proposal, which is expected to simplify zoning—paving the way to revive a key transportation link that has been closed since 2020.  The MoCo Show
  • Maryland Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman released a statement on April 18th warning that ending the IRS Direct File program after the 2025 tax season could risk higher costs and more fraud—she noted that over 90% of Marylanders who used the free tax filing system preferred it to past options.  The MoCo Show
  • During the 2025 Gaithersburg State of the City event at Asbury Methodist Village, Mayor Jud Ashman awarded the county’s Animal Services veterinary team the Distinguished Friend Award, The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center the Outstanding Organization Award, and Planning Commission Chair John Bauer the Distinguished Resident Award. City Councilmembers noted that the veterinary team cared for over 8,000 animals and ran a free weekly rabies clinic while Bauer guided major local development projects.  Montgomery Community Media
