- ➤ The Maryland State Department of Education announced that the Child Care Scholarship Program will freeze new enrollments on May 1 due to capacity limits as demand increased by 87% since January. Current families will keep receiving benefits and providers will remain paid while new applications will be processed and waitlisted — updates will be provided as funds become available. - ➤ Montgomery Parks and MTA Purple Line completed a fish passage project at a stream underpass on Piney Branch Road in the Long Branch community, restoring migratory fish habitat for species like Eastern blacknose dace, creek chub, and white sucker. - ➤ County Executive Marc Elrich vetoed Expedited Bill 2-25 that would have given a tax exemption lasting twenty years for converting underused commercial buildings to rental housing because he said it lacked safeguards and offered excessive benefits to developers + community representatives supported his veto and said such conversions are already in progress without subsidies. - ➤ County Executive Marc Elrich vetoed a bill on Monday that would give a 20-year property tax break for converting high-vacancy commercial buildings into housing despite a 10 to 1 County Council vote—Council President Kate Stewart will schedule a vote to override the veto after formal notice is given, and supporters say the bill would raise revenue and add affordable units.
