- ➤ On April 23, the Sandy Spring Friends School Board of Trustees announced the school will remain open for the 2025-2026, 2026-2027, and 2027-2028 school years. The decision followed a $15 million pledge by the Friends of Sandy Spring group, and a task force will meet with staff and parents on April 28 to provide more details. The MoCo Show
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police investigated three separate shooting incidents last night in Germantown, Derwood, and Gaithersburg—one incident in Germantown at 11:48 p.m. damaged two vehicles and a home with no injuries, a man was shot in Derwood at 12:47 a.m. while exiting his car and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and another man was shot in Gaithersburg at 1:03 a.m. while walking with no suspect identified. - ➤ Montgomery County Police responded to three shootings that occurred from Monday night into early Tuesday, with one incident on Staffordshire Road in Germantown at 11:48 p.m. damaging a home and vehicles, another on Gramercy Boulevard in Derwood at 12:47 a.m. injuring a man who was hospitalized, and a third on Centerway Drive in Gaithersburg at 1:03 a.m. when another man was shot and taken to the hospital—police have not located any suspects. - ➤ On April 22, The Washington Post announced that two Montgomery County educators—Flower Hill Elementary principal Dr. Joshua Fine and Odessa Shannon Middle School teacher Rebecca Burtram—were named finalists for the 2025 Principal and Teacher of the Year Awards; Fine improved literacy skills using evidence-based methods and Burtram raised English proficiency through creative classroom programs. - ➤ Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will deliver his annual State of the County address today at 6 p.m. at the Leggett Executive Office Building in Rockville — the free event will offer light refreshments and parking nearby. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Gov. Wes Moore signed a series of justice reform bills on Tuesday that make it easier for long-serving inmates to apply for parole and to expunge criminal records, and he approved a measure to protect federal workers from job cuts. Lawmakers said the changes will have an immediate impact once the bills take effect. WTOP
- ➤ On Tuesday, eleven Montgomery County chambers of commerce urged the County Council to remove a 3.4% property tax increase from the FY2026 budget—citing concerns over added financial strain on families and businesses.
