  • Halal Munchies is now open at 18530 Woodfield Road in Gaithersburg, taking over the former Famous Kabobs space. The restaurant serves halal platters with chicken, lamb, fish and more daily from 11 am to 11 pm and has a weekend special platter at $17.99.  The MoCo Show
  • Plaza Mexico at the North Pointe at Flower Hill in Gaithersburg is nearing an early summer opening as its liquor license hearing is set for Thursday, May 21 (a key step toward adding a rooftop bar to its family-friendly venue).  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gaithersburg galleries host spring art events featuring 'Beyond The Canvas' at the Arts Barn until June 15 and a Spring Artisan Market on April 25, a juried show at Kentlands Mansion through July 13, plus 'Big, Bold & Bright' at Bohrer Park’s gallery until July 17.  The MoCo Show
  • The hybrid Riot! DC Music Festival is a survivor-led community event organized by Mac N’ Toss, slated for Sunday at The Garage in Boyds (supporting Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day). The festival offers 18 music acts, vendors and nonprofit tables with a pay-what-you-want admission.  WTOP
  • The Montgomery County Office of Community Partnerships and the Asian American Health Initiative will host the fifth annual celebration for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month on Sunday, May 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Josh Fine, principal at Flower Hill Elementary, was named Maryland's National Distinguished Principal of the Year by the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals. His leadership since 2020 boosted early literacy gains and improved school culture, reducing suspensions and absenteeism + increasing family engagement.  The MoCo Show
  • MCPS high school graduation ceremonies are scheduled from May 28 through June 12, with most events taking place at UMBC and livestreamed on YouTube+ check individual school schedules for the speakers and times.  The MoCo Show
  • Northwood High sophomore Leul Dawit won the election as Montgomery County Public Schools' 49th Student Member on April 23 and will start his term on July 1. He will serve without pay while receiving a $25,000 college scholarship, service learning hours, and a social studies credit.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Last night, the Kansas City Chiefs traded with the Cleveland Browns + selected Montgomery County native Delane Mansoor from Silver Spring. Mansoor, whose standout LSU season earned him First-Team All-American honors, now begins his NFL journey.  The MoCo Show
