- ➤ Montgomery County offers a full weekend of events — today features artisan studio tours at the Agricultural Reserve, a film festival in Gaithersburg, and a teens basketball tournament in Silver Spring. On Saturday and Sunday, families can join Earth Month and science activities in Wheaton, Glen Echo, and Takoma Park and enjoy book and antique festivals in Kensington, Rockville, and Poolesville — events that celebrate local culture. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Bethesda resident José Andrés will co-host NBC’s cooking competition series Yes, Chef! with Martha Stewart. The show will air at 10 p.m. on April 28 and stream on Peacock starting April 29 — it features 12 chefs nominated for both their skills and personal challenges. The MoCo Show
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Anuva Maloo, a junior at Montgomery Blair High School + class president, was elected as the Student Member of the Board of Education with 62 percent of 61,647 votes cast on April 23. Her term begins on July 1 + she will get a $25,000 college scholarship, student service hours and an honors-level social studies credit. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools and the County Board of Education will present the Distinguished Service to Education Honors on May 6 at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda—doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the program starts at 6:30 p.m., honoring the MCPS Teacher of the Year plus winners in Business Partner, Community Partner, School Service Volunteer, and Student Service Award categories. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Maryland Attorney General Brown and 39 other attorneys general urged Congress to continue funding for the Legal Services Corporation to help low-income residents, veterans, and rural communities access legal aid. Maryland Legal Aid gets $6.5 million from LSC — this funding supports over 22,000 Marylanders each year with critical civil legal services. The MoCo Show
- ➤ County Executive Marc Elrich dropped his plan for a 3.5% property tax increase and will now propose raising the county income tax from 3.2% to 3.3%, a change that if approved will be retroactive to January 1 & the Council is reviewing the $7.7 billion budget while weighing its impact on services.
