ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Montgomery County Police investigated a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred Thursday night at approximately 9 p.m. on northbound Shady Grove Road at Blackwell Road—an adult male was struck by a 2020 white Genesis G70, was taken to a hospital, and later died while the driver stayed at the scene.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield defaulted on a $235 million loan for Westfield Wheaton Mall, which has raised doubts about its future. The company is discussing next steps—sale, refinancing or foreclosure—as major retailers like Costco and AMC Theatres face changing shopping habits.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Jinlan Dumplings, founded by Jennifer Wenhua, opened at 11620-A Rockville Pike—next to Tropical Smoothie Cafe in the White Flint Station shopping center—and is offering a 5% discount from today through April 28.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS parents are urging a new 'Away All Day' cellphone policy—banning students from using cellphones, earbuds and smartwatches during school hours—to address declining test scores. They have circulated a letter to Superintendent Thomas W. Taylor that already has nearly 2,000 signatures.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 21st, Gaithersburg held a joint public hearing for the Gateway Lakeforest plan to redevelop 481 N Frederick Ave and 101 Lakeforest Blvd with an 8-story multi-family building featuring up to 410 units and ground floor commercial space—this plan may also include a 21,000 SF anchor grocery store while keeping an office building at 702 Russell Ave with minor improvements. The Planning Commission’s record remains open until 5 p.m. May 23rd—public comments can be mailed or emailed as the Mayor and City Council review the plan on June 4th and June 13th with policy discussion scheduled for July 7th.  The MoCo Show
