CULTURE NEWS

  • Local residents can enjoy a variety of free regional cultural events this weekend. The Rockville Little Theatre shows The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (through May 10) and the 13th annual Rockville Arts Festival at The Square offers creative family fun.  WTOP

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A frost on April 21 hit local farms hard, with some losing up to 90% of their crops. Windridge Vineyard in Darnestown (Robert Butz) said his business has backup inventory, but neighboring farms that grow fruit face a tough season ahead and need community support.  WTOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Board of Education approved new administrative appointments on Thursday, Apr. 30. The changes include a new principal at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, a supervisor for environmental literacy, and principals for Westbrook and Takoma Park Elementary Schools.  The MoCo Show

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County officials, including County Executive Marc Elrich, announced the completion of a 6.8-megawatt microgrid at the David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operation Center in Derwood on April 30. The system using solar panels and battery storage will support the county's zero-emission bus fleet and clean energy efforts.  The MoCo Show
  • A black bear was seen roaming a backyard in Darnestown Thursday night as it searched for food after hibernation. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources advises residents to secure trash + pet food + bird feeders to deter further visits.  The MoCo Show

  • Councilmember Friedson requested meetings with County Executive Marc Elrich, police and school officials to return permanently assigned officers to every high school amid recent safety concerns, and he asked input from Rockville, Gaithersburg & Park police to craft a new strategy.  Montgomery Community Media
  • County Executive Marc Elrich issued a statement on Thursday recognizing J. Craig Venter’s groundbreaking work in decoding the human genome and its lasting impact in shaping our county’s life sciences sector. His legacy carries on through the J.   • VEG ER for Pets will occupy the largest unit in the subdivided former Party City space in Kentlands — marking its first Montgomery County outpost — while Wonder food hall will fill another unit and a third remains available for lease.
