  • Several guide dogs in training spent Sunday afternoon at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad station in Montgomery County where emergency personnel showed them real-life sounds and equipment. Jeanyne Gembarski from Guiding Eyes for the Blind said the outing class—designed to reward calm behavior—was a key part of preparing the pups for service.  WTOP

BUSINESS NEWS

  • La Poteria Local opened in September 2021 at 19116 Montgomery Village Ave to serve coffee and Colombian street food, including empanadas and waffles made with cassava flour—its high ratings on Google and Yelp show locals appreciate its unique menu and mobile offerings at Clarksburg Outlets.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nominations for African American Living Legends are open until Saturday, June 1—local residents who have made significant community contributions can be nominated with a brief narrative of their impact. County Executive Marc Elrich will make final selections and the awards ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the Black Rock Center for the Arts in Germantown.  Montgomery Community Media
  • The King Barn Dairy MOOseum Barn at South Germantown Recreational Park (18028 Central Park Circle) is open for the season on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through October and offers free entry along with interactive displays and educational programs about local dairy history.  The MoCo Show

FINANCE NEWS

  • Montgomery County Commission for Women is hosting free virtual financial seminars today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Zoom in partnership with Montgomery County Public Libraries. Financial advisors Jamie Lapin and Thiago Glieger will lead sessions covering topics including financial planning + retirement planning, leaving federal service and divorce and money, and residents must register each week.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WalletHub has ranked Maryland as the 5th best state for police officers by comparing 30 factors such as pay and local spending—median salaries now top $77,000 as National Police Week starts May 11.  The MoCo Show
  • On Monday, county councilmembers rejected a property tax increase and discussed a proposal by County Executive Marc Elrich to raise the income tax from 3.2% to 3.3% effective retroactively from January 1, which would bring in $75 million if applied retroactively or $25 million if not. Many members expressed concerns about volatile incomes and potential layoffs, and a public hearing is set for May 13.  Montgomery Community Media
