ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On May 5 in Montgomery Village, a mother who shielded her infant from a vehicle impact suffered a fractured leg and is scheduled for surgery—community members are rallying to help cover her mounting medical costs.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • JCRC reported that Montgomery County Public Schools now account for two-thirds of Maryland’s antisemitic incidents, citing examples like hate graffiti and discriminatory gestures in several schools. The group met with MCPS leaders to push for a zero-tolerance policy and additional anti-bias training starting in August.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Public Schools named Oscar Alvarenga 2026 Supporting Services Employee of the Year. He serves as a newcomers transition coordinator helping more than 4,000 students and families with school enrollment and access to key services (housing, healthcare, legal support).  The MoCo Show
  • Wheaton High School will host the Fourth Annual Gilbert Games on May 15 to celebrate inclusion, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Students from several high schools will join for accessible competitions — events honoring former student Sarah Gilbert and featuring modified activities with lunch donated by Chick-fil-A.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Public Schools face growing lunch debt as unpaid meal balances climb while ensuring every student receives a meal. The central kitchen in Rockville produces over 100k meals daily and will raise meal prices by 30 cents next school year — helping cover rising food and wage costs.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery Blair teacher Michelle Elie was named MCPS Teacher of the Year Tuesday for her work in enhancing the African-American literature program and launching Blair’s African-American Studies Academy (she teaches 12th grade honors English).   • Fourth grader Hemachandra Mulugu of Diamond Elementary was sworn in as Gaithersburg’s Junior Mayor on May 4 during the City Council meeting; he will attend the Gaithersburg Book Festival on May 16 + lead the Memorial Day Pledge on May 30.  The MoCo Show

  • A groundbreaking for The Sage apartment complex with 125 affordable units took place in Derwood last week. Located near the Shady Grove Metro Station (and set to include a new public library), the development will open in about two years.  Montgomery Community Media
