EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Montgomery County Board of Education approved new appointments on Thursday, May 7 — naming Lisa N. Shorts as principal of Benjamin Banneker Middle School, Dr. Jeffrey D. Mehr as principal of Cresthaven Elementary, and Renny Hosein as supervisor for Enterprise Network and Cybersecurity Operations. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools disabled Canvas on May 7 due to a reported cybersecurity issue that exposed student information — community members are advised not to log in while the system is under review. The MoCo Show
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Maryland officials celebrated a milestone on May 7 as crews installed the final rail on the Purple Line connecting Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, leaving the project 90% complete. The project will move to testing and final construction before opening service by the end of 2027. FOX 5
- ➤ Gaithersburg will host its annual Memorial Day Observance on Saturday, May 30 at 11 a.m. at Christman Park where wreath-laying, music and remarks by guest speaker Capt. - ➤ Montgomery County Councilmember Evan Glass introduced a bill on Tuesday to pause data center permits in the county due to concerns over environmental impacts for a 360-megawatt project pending in Dickerson (the measure aims to address local worries). WTOP
