- ➤ Esisonia Sotomayor turned her personal hardship into a mission when her younger brother’s mental health challenges and homelessness inspired her to found the CORE Foundation to provide food, clothing, and free showers at local encampments—she also supports students through care closets at local high schools and works with community partners to offer dignity where traditional shelters have fallen short. - ➤ Last week, officers with Maryland-National Capital Park Police (Montgomery County Division) arrested a driver in the Long Branch area after finding cash and suspected fentanyl pills in his vehicle. The MoCo Show
- ➤ On May 8 at approximately 1:11 p.m., Gaithersburg Police arrested a 15-year-old student at Gaithersburg High School after officers discovered a loaded—privately manufactured handgun on school property and he faced charges for underage firearm possession and other related offenses. The MoCo Show
- ➤ On Wednesday, Montgomery County police warned residents to verify that door-to-door home improvement and yardwork services are performed by licensed contractors because unlicensed workers may take payment upfront, do poor work, or use distraction theft tactics—residents are advised to lock their doors and confirm any worker's identity before letting them in. - ➤ On Wednesday, county executive Marc Elrich and council vice president Will Jawando urged council to raise the income tax rate from 3.2% to 3.3% so the proposed $3.65 billion capital budget can fully fund Montgomery County Public Schools. They said the increase — costing an extra $100 a year for someone earning $100,000 — will help hire 160 special education teachers, 500 full-time aides and additional security staff to meet rising student needs amid economic uncertainty. - ➤ Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced a settlement with AdoreMe that resolves claims the company enrolled Maryland consumers in a VIP membership without clear consent—affected customers who never used the membership will be refunded while AdoreMe must improve its billing and cancellation practices. The deal requires the company to provide better monthly billing notices and pay a $250,000 fee to the Attorney General’s Office—refund checks are expected to be mailed within the next two to three months.
