CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) said a 2-year-old girl died after being left in a hot car in the Wheaton-Glenmont area on May 7 at 1:44 p.m. (first responders found her unresponsive after several hours in the vehicle), and the case remains under investigation.  The MoCo Show
  • Today, Anissa Maroof, a 48-year-old doctor from Potomac who ran a practice in Bethesda, pleaded guilty to federal charges for distributing controlled substances—including Alprazolam, Amphetamine-dextroamphetamine and Buprenorphine—from January 2019 to June 2022 and faces sentencing on August 19th at 2:30 p.m.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 24, the Montgomery County Alliance of Black School Educators honored 26 graduating seniors with the Distinguished African American Scholar Awards for their academic excellence and community leadership—students from several high schools, including Gaithersburg High School, were recognized for their achievements. The award ceremony celebrated the honorees’ commitment to leadership at school and in their communities.  The MoCo Show
  • MCPS revised its Personal Mobile Devices regulation to cover cell phones, smart watches, tablets and other devices by limiting their use during class and allowing them before and after school and on buses—this revised rule will take effect at the start of the 2025 to 2026 school year.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery College's international students remained anxious about the new administration's immigration policies even though no F-1 visa revocations occurred, with 1,152 students holding those visas in fall 2024. Faculty and staff provided one-on-one support as concerns grew from similar actions at other local schools + students voiced significant stress about their future legal status.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s Environmental Protection honored K–12 students at the 2025 Waste Reduction-Reuse-Recycling Poster Contest Ceremony in Rockville on May 9. The contest received 155 entries from 27 schools (the highest participation since the pandemic) and aimed to boost zero-waste efforts (focusing on reducing single-use plastics and waste overall).  The MoCo Show
  • Candidate packets for Gaithersburg mayor and council races are now available online and at City Hall at 31 S. Summit Ave. Prospective candidates must submit petitions signed by at least 100 residents by August 21 plus attend an info session on May 29 or August 5 to appear on the ballot for the November 4 election.  The MoCo Show
