  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s Montgomery Village chapter helps families apply for free twin beds for children ages 3-17 who lack safe sleeping spaces. The volunteer-driven nonprofit has built and delivered 464 beds since 2023 in Montgomery County + continues to accept applications from community referral partners.  The MoCo Show

  • Steeze Burger, named the best burger by The Washington Post, will open its first brick-and-mortar location on Sunday, May 24, at the Shops at Potomac Valley in Gaithersburg — the menu will feature popular burgers, chili cheese dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, fries, and Mountain Dew flavors.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gaithersburg Book Festival (free and family-friendly) takes place at Bohrer Park this Saturday, featuring exhibitors including authors and literary organizations and offering free workshops on comic character creation and fantasy world-building.  WTOP
  • Ariéto Yukayú Guáyiga – An Evening of Strength + Spirit is set to take place in Gaithersburg on Thursday, May 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; the event will feature live performances, speakers, and educational segments honoring Arawak Taíno survival.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Libraries will launch its Summer Reading Challenge on Saturday, June 13 with the theme 'Unearth A Story' & offer dinosaur, archaeology, and paleontology activities for all ages at local branches.  The MoCo Show
  • Retired volunteers from The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center now help Fields Road Elementary School students learn reading, math and a second language on a weekly basis (the program began last year with a handful of retirees), strengthening intergenerational ties in the community.  WTOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Councilmember Will Jawando warned Tuesday that proposed budget cuts could cut jobs at MCPS (teachers and maintenance staff) as the county faces a $189 million shortfall, and he urged using funds from other county areas to protect schools.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Councilmembers Glass and Jawando introduced bills to pause data center projects in Montgomery County. Glass proposed a six-month delay amid environmental concerns while Jawando sought a two-year hold to enforce clean energy standards, with the proposals set for council review in early June.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Metro will launch a redesigned website Sunday, May 17 and an updated Metro Pulse app Sunday, May 31 to simplify transit planning and improve accessibility — the new platforms include AI-powered chat support and real-time service information.  The MoCo Show
