ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County Police said a pedestrian was fatally struck at about 5:31 a.m. when a silver 2018 Toyota Camry hit him as he crossed Watkins Mill Road and Route 355 in Gaithersburg, and the driver stayed at the scene to provide first aid before first responders arrived—officials are investigating the collision. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Montgomery County jury convicted 23-year-old Trevon Hatcherson-Ross of first-degree murder for killing 19-year-old Justice Elliott on a Metrobus in 2023—he is also convicted of attempted first-degree murder, firearm offenses and reckless endangerment and will face a sentencing hearing on August 20th at 8:30 a.m. in Circuit Court. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools adopted a new policy that limits phone use for elementary and middle school students and allows high school students to use phones only at lunch and between classes, with principals able to permit instructional use; the policy will take effect at the start of next school year. The Montgomery County Education Association commended the policy and the county council’s proposal to withdraw $50 million from a trust fund—designed to nearly cover the school’s budget request while leaving an $8 million gap. - ➤ Gaithersburg High School hosted the ALO prom on May 9 for students from Albert Einstein, Sherwood, Springbrook, Wheaton, and Watkins Mills+ the gym was transformed with handmade 'Under the Sea' decorations featuring bubbles and sea creatures. Students, staff, and parents enjoyed music and dancing as resource teacher Sarah McKinley and Student Government Association President Nilda Keres led a collaborative effort+ the event provided an inclusive celebration for all. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ County officials and school staff proposed a budget plan for fiscal year 2026 that will cover 99.8% of the school funding needs without raising property or income taxes. The plan calls for a one-time withdrawal of $50 million from a county trust fund—$25 million now and $25 million later—and it must be approved by the council and Executive Marc Elrich. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Maryland Department of Health warned that proposed federal Medicaid cuts released last Sunday—including work requirements, reduced funding and limits on care—could affect over 1.5 million Marylanders + strain more than 120,000 local providers. State officials stressed the need for a strong federal-state partnership to protect coverage for children, families and older adults + preserve the state’s health system. The MoCo Show

- ➤ The Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors reported that the D.C. housing market is starting to look like it did before covid, with active sales in Montgomery County and Washington in April.
