CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal stabbing that killed 31-year-old Emmanuel Bisudu Sesay on May 15 on Lockwood Drive in Silver Spring+ no suspects have been named and anyone with information is urged to contact the Crime Solvers tips line+.  The MoCo Show
  • Detectives from Montgomery County Department of Police are asking for help locating missing 41-year-old Cecilia Antionette Ashby, who was last seen on May 17 at 12 a.m. near the 20700 block of Crystal Hill in Germantown and is described as 5-foot 7-inches tall, 170 lbs with black hair and brown eyes, wearing a black jacket with white writing, a blue New Balance shirt with white writing, eyeglasses and black shoes; anyone with information is urged to call the police non-emergency line (301) 279-8000.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gaithersburg Book Festival was held Saturday at Bohrer Park with beautiful weather and large crowds enjoying author talks, writing workshops, and a Children's Village. Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman introduced hometown author Jeanine Cummins and many other speakers—highlighting the wide appeal of the event.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery College students Danae 'Samantha' Flores-Tene and Rodin Ruiz were awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship—offering up to $55,000 per year in funding, personalized advising, and access to a national network to ease their transfer to four-year institutions. They are two of only 90 winners selected nationwide from over 1,600 applicants for their academic excellence and leadership.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s Office of Food Systems Resilience is launching a three-part strategy to reduce food waste and improve access to nutritious food by offering grants for improved infrastructure, coordination and operations—grant applications for the Food Recovery Network Infrastructure program are open through May 30, with additional coordination and operational grants coming this summer and fall—to help address rising food insecurity.  The MoCo Show

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA approved Novavax’s Covid-19 vaccine with restrictions so that only people 65 or older or those 12 to 64 with conditions such as cancer, diabetes or asthma may receive it. Novavax must now run a Phase 4 trial for people 50—64 before its planned fall rollout with Sanofi.  Montgomery Community Media
