COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery County Recreation will start its outdoor pool pre-season on Saturday, May 24 at noon with limited hours until June 13 — after which the counties’ seven pools, including Upper County Outdoor Pool in Gaithersburg, will switch to a full summer schedule from June 14 to August 15 with special hours on Memorial Day, Juneteenth and Independence Day.  The MoCo Show

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Montgomery County Swift Water Rescue teams rescued four adults and two dogs stranded by strong currents near Pond Island and relocated them to Seneca Creek boat landing near Riley’s Lock Monday night—no injuries were reported.  The MoCo Show
  • On Tuesday morning, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a collision at Norwood Rd and New Hampshire Ave near Cloverly—where a school bus carrying more than 20 children was involved—and three individuals were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • A 17-year-old teen from Olney was charged with vehicular manslaughter after Montgomery County Police determined he drove 86 mph in a 40-mph zone while using his cell phone during a February 19 crash on the 2600 block of Olney-Sandy Spring Road—killing a Bethesda man.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County police arrested Jaheim Malik Crum, 22, on May 14 at Montgomery Village Avenue for 17 retail robberies—including two armed hold-ups on October 23 and November 6—and charged him along with D’vario Renee Lewis, 19, who is held on an unrelated case.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Natalia Coronado-Mercer, a sophomore at Appomattox Regional Governor's School, won 1st prize in the Gaithersburg Book Festival high school poetry contest for her poem 'Chainlink Angels.' Local poet Holly Karapetkova announced the winners on May 17, awarding prizes from $25 to $250 to students from Montgomery County and nearby areas.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MCDOT announced a special transit schedule for Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, with most services running on a Sunday schedule and routes such as Ride On extRa route 101 and Flex bus suspended. County offices will be closed, drivers can park free at Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton garages, and no MARC Train or most MTA Commuter Bus service will run—riders should consult timetables for more details.  The MoCo Show
  • Governor Wes Moore held his final bill signing ceremony on May 20th and signed laws that turned a $3 billion deficit into a surplus and reformed the state’s procurement process to help small businesses—he also enacted measures to lower energy costs, boost worker safety, and strengthen library public health.  The MoCo Show
