COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Community Action Board celebrated the graduation of 27 residents from its eight‐month bilingual Community Advocacy Institute on May 20, marking the largest class in the program’s nine‐year history. Officials praised the graduates for learning how local government works and noted many now serve on community boards and commissions.  The MoCo Show
  • During the county’s Recycling Awareness Week, officials awarded winners at the 26th annual Recycling Achievement Recognition Awards on Tuesday (May 20th) in North Bethesda.   • Fish Taco, a local family-owned restaurant known for its Baja-inspired cuisine, is set to open a new location at The Shops of Potomac Valley in Gaithersburg by the end of this year or early next year—this site was previously planned for a Wayback Burger and once housed an AT&T store. The restaurant will offer seasonal Mexican-style dishes made with sustainable, locally sourced ingredients along with tacos, rice bowls and burritos.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Police increased patrols around local Jewish institutions after two Israeli Embassy staff members were fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC following an American Jewish Committee event Wednesday night — the department said there was no known threat.  The MoCo Show
  • Detectives from Montgomery County Police are seeking help to locate 18-year-old Bryan Ekabe—last seen on May 21 at about 3:47 p.m. on the 20300 block of Scenery Drive in Germantown and described as 6 ft 4 in, 160 lbs with brown eyes and black hair, wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, green sweatpants, white and black sneakers, and carrying a backpack—while urging anyone with information to call 301-279-8000.  The MoCo Show
  • After a shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday night that killed two Israeli Embassy staffers, Montgomery County police increased high visibility patrols around Jewish institutions—measures set to last until the end of the week, officials said.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, the County Council unanimously approved a $7.6 billion operating budget after a straw vote last week and rejected the proposed income tax increase from County Executive Marc Elrich. The budget funds public schools with $3.6 billion, health and social services with over $554 million, police with $352 million, fire with $310 million, and affordable housing with $81.4 million — while Ride On bus service stays free for all users.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando announced his run for county executive to replace term-limited Marc Elrich at a rally in Silver Spring. He said his campaign will focus on fixing potholes, supporting affordable housing, and investing in public schools.  WTOP
  • Maryland State Police from the Rockville barrack and other units will conduct high-visibility DUI and traffic enforcement over Memorial Day weekend to prevent impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving. Troopers from 23 barracks will use saturation patrols along key highways with support from funds provided by the Maryland Highway Safety Office.  The MoCo Show
