A Community Carnival and Yard Sale is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Creative Learning Center in Derwood to support Gibson Theimer Rivera, a young child hospitalized after a severe lawn mower accident on May 10 in Olney + the free event will feature a silent auction, lemonade stand, bake sale, face painting, games and food trucks with proceeds helping pay for his ongoing medical care.
On Tuesday morning a major pipe burst at Gaithersburg High School forced the closure of the special education hallway and about 20 classrooms as repair crews worked to fix the damage and removed damaged equipment (including computers).
Rowan, a piercing studio with licensed nurses, is opening a new space in Downtown Crown as its third Maryland location after previous openings in Bethesda and Annapolis.
The studio will move into a vacant space (between Ideal Image and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse) and its opening date has not been set.

Lauren Merillana, a 13-year-old seventh grader at Robert Frost Middle School, aced her spelling and vocabulary tests on Tuesday in the Scripps National Spelling Bee by correctly spelling croquembouche and choosing the right definition for spontaneity—she was one of 243 spellers from across the nation and read over 100 novels last year.
Montgomery County Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team has been honored with the CIT Response Team of the Year Award by CIT International ahead of its annual conference in Anaheim on August 11—13 for its effective use of de-escalation techniques and commitment to community support. The multidisciplinary team of officers and therapists handles behavioral health emergencies and conducts four CIT trainings each year.
Montgomery County’s African American Health Program will hold its 11th annual Community Day on May 31 at the Bioscience Education Center of Montgomery College Germantown Campus—offering free health screenings, a blood drive, job help, workshops, dancing, and cooking demos along with a GirlTREK walk that starts at 8 a.m. County Executive Marc Elrich said the event will help deal with chronic illnesses and boost health equity in the community.
May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and the Lourie Center, a nonprofit in Rockville, offers programs to support children’s social and emotional wellness including Head Start and clinical services.
Dr. Jimmy Venza, the center’s executive director, said early support helps kids share feelings and handle stress — a view that can guide parents and teachers.
