CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 49-year-old Gaithersburg man—Fredi Torres—died after an assault at Silver Diner on Rockville Pike at about 11:52 p.m. on May 21, and Montgomery County detectives are investigating his death while urging witnesses to come forward. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Takoma Park Police arrested Mohamed Sheriff Kanu, aged 33 from Silver Spring, for theft and assault after he stole merchandise and hit a security guard at a Walgreens on University Blvd on May 27 at about 1:39 p.m.—camera footage showed he filled a bag with items, fled, and resisted arrest before being detained. - ➤ Detectives from Montgomery County Department of Police (6th District Investigative Section) are asking for help to locate Zenobia Sadler, a missing 55-year-old last seen on May 24th in the 9200 block of Frostburg Way in Montgomery Village, and anyone with information should call (301) 279-8000. - ➤ Police reported that a man died following an altercation at Silver Diner on Rockville Pike last Wednesday, May 21 near midnight when a patron attacked the diner manager and employees intervened to find Fredi Torres, 49, from Gaithersburg unresponsive before he was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead—a pending autopsy will determine the cause. - ➤ Montgomery County will host its 28th annual Juneteenth Celebration on June 21 at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown — a free event with live performances, local vendors and food under the theme 'Pushing Back — The Fight for Freedom is Not Over.' The celebration will kick off on June 20 with an African American Living Legends Awards Ceremony honoring residents aged 75 and older for their service. The MoCo Show

- ➤ Redland Middle School in Derwood won first place in the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s Paint the Plow contest for its transportation-themed design titled 'Life is a Highway'—a design that more than 2,600 residents voted for during a Truck Day event on May 16. The decorated snowplow will carry the winning design when deployed this winter to clear roads during snow and ice events. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Lauren Merillana, a seventh grader at Robert Frost Middle School, advanced to the National Spelling Bee semifinals after correctly spelling challenging words at the Gaylord National Resort on May 28 — she was one of 57 finalists from 242 competitors. Montgomery Community Media
