COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Village celebrates its 60th anniversary this year as residents reflect on the community founded by Clarence Kettler that grew from a 412-acre farm into neighborhoods with Lake Whetstone, parks, schools and shopping centers. The planned community showcases decades of thoughtful development.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Compari Trattoria, a new modern Italian restaurant, will open soon at 72 Market Street in Kentlands — replacing the space where Caspian House of Kabob once served guests. Details on the menu and opening timeline remain to be announced.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two Montgomery County high school students were recognized at the Gaithersburg Book Festival High School Poetry Contest on May 16. Eve Browne from Thomas S. Wootton High earned third place and Hargun Malhotra from Poolesville was named fan favorite as cash prizes were given.  The MoCo Show
  • Two Montgomery County natives, Thomas Jane and Jon Bernthal, have both brought Marvel’s Punisher to life—Jane starred in the 2004 film adaptation and Bernthal revived the character in Netflix’s Daredevil and The Punisher series. Their local roots include schools in Rockville and Cabin John.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s Department of Recreation opened outdoor pools for Memorial Day and is now offering lifeguard jobs with help for certification. The department will host drop-in rec center hours for teens — designed with input from its Teen Works program to provide safe summer spots for hanging out.  WTOP
  • Montgomery County Public Schools announced planned job cuts in more than 400 positions, including school social workers, psychologists, and navigators, to address a shortfall despite a 143 million budget increase that fell 36 million short — the district is offering retirement incentives to lower the cuts.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Department of Transportation announced that Ride On Flex service in the Rockville and Glenmont/Wheaton areas will end on July 1 with final rides on June 30 (alternative transit options remain available for affected riders).  The MoCo Show

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Eight new restaurant openings across Montgomery County have drawn crowds this spring, with standout spots including Burnt Hill Chef’s Table in Clarksburg, El Patio's expansion in Rockville, Marathon Deli in Kensington, Quincy’s Golf & Social in Gaithersburg, and Steeze Burger, which opened May 24.  The MoCo Show
