EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools hosted a meeting on June 4 to review four high school boundary options that could ease overcrowding and add nearly 3,000 new seats—some parents worry the changes might force them to move if their current school zones shift.  FOX 5
  • Ten Maryland public high school students from Howard and Montgomery counties were named semifinalists in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program by the Maryland State Department of Education. Up to 161 students nationwide will be named U.S. Presidential Scholars in the coming months—this award honors high grades, art, and community leadership.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown joined a multistate group on June 4 in filing an amicus brief that supports Michigan’s law banning conversion therapy for minors — the brief argues the practice is harmful, ineffective, and below accepted mental health care standards.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County opened a new police station on Monday to serve Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village. The modern facility on Paramount Park Drive (near I-270 and Watkins Mill Road) has state-of-the-art units, a research lab, a community room, and room for 178 employees and volunteers.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Gaithersburg residents will vote for a new mayor and two at-large City Council Members on November 4; those elected will serve four-year terms. Voters may cast ballots in person at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., request a mail-in ballot starting September 5, or vote Early on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—candidate packets for Council runs are available at City Hall until August 21.  The MoCo Show

HEALTH NEWS

  • County officials launched a Mobile Health Clinic in Poolesville to deliver medical, dental, and behavioral health services to underserved neighborhoods. The van has already served about 1,600 people and will expand care through local partnerships — including with WUMCO and other community groups.  Montgomery Community Media
