CRIME NEWS

  • Since May 21, Montgomery County Police’s Summer Traffic Task Force conducted over 200 stops and made 33 DUI arrests, focusing on high-risk times—prom season, graduations, and summer holidays. The joint effort will continue through the end of July in partnership with state and local agencies.  The MoCo Show
  • The Montgomery County Police said Myrtle Gottlieb, 88, who was in a stopped car near Sam Eig Highway and Fields Road, died after being hit from behind by an 18-year-old driver suspected of DUI and driving without a license—detectives are still investigating the collision.  The MoCo Show
  • Detectives from Montgomery County Department of Police (Special Victims Investigations Division) are seeking help finding 12-year-old Aiden 'Niko' Offutt, who was last seen Tuesday, June 3 at about 6:45 p.m. near the 19600 block of Sparr Spring Road in Montgomery Village wearing a black sweatshirt with a skull and gray sweatpants and may be riding an MCDOT Ride On bus, so anyone with information is urged to call the non-emergency line at (301) 279-8000.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Organizers of the 20th annual Salvadoreñisimo Festival canceled the event at Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg because they feared encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. County Executive Marc Elrich called the cancellation sad—he said the county will continue to support immigrant communities.  The MoCo Show
  • Olney Theatre Center has scheduled three free events this summer: a Juneteenth Celebration on June 19 with a concert by Kanysha Williams, a Konvenience Festival on July 12 honoring Korean culture with local performance troupes, and SummerFest on July 27 featuring workshops, family activities and a drag showcase—each event will include local vendors and is held rain or shine.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County leaders opened a new police station in Gaithersburg on June 2 at 222 Paramount Park Drive to serve Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village. The building is built for energy efficiency + it has room for 178 staff, a community room, and backup power for emergencies.  The MoCo Show

HEALTH NEWS

  • Howard University Hospital and Adventist HealthCare ended their planned partnership that was to lead to a sale, and the hospital said there will be no disruptions for physicians or patients as it seeks a new partner when the partnership ends in February—continuing improvements from the five-year collaboration.  WTOP
