CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery County native Sophia Tyris ended her 10-year law career to launch Cocobear, a line of plush toys people can customize with mystery bundles and DIY kits—designed to support small makers. EDUCATION NEWS

  • A team from Hallie Wells Middle School, led by science teacher Dustin Deem with support from Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, won the Maryland MESA State Championship and will prepare to compete in the MESA USA National Engineering Design Competition on June 23. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sugarloaf Mountain — a 500-million-year-old, conical rock formation near the Montgomery County line — was preserved in the early 1900s by Gordon Strong, who built trails for public use. Today, Stronghold, Inc. manages the area and welcomes visitors for hiking, picnicking and scenic drives with the entrance open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland’s House Bill 352, part of the Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act, will change vehicle registration fees, excise taxes and the rule for historic vehicles starting July 1—only vehicles built in 1999 or earlier will be considered historic while new fee rates are set based on weight and use. The MVA updates will affect both rental and non-rental vehicles and require owners to review the new fee structures before registration.  The MoCo Show
  • The Maryland Supreme Court upheld a state law that bans people with felony convictions from owning guns, and Attorney General Anthony Brown said the decision keeps communities safe — he added the ruling upholds common sense and protects constitutional rights.
