BUSINESS NEWS

  • Silver Diner unveiled its 1,581 SF pergola for outdoor dining at its RIO on Washingtonian Blvd in Gaithersburg—featuring a louvered roof and retractable windows that employees operate remotely—with two access points connecting the dining area to the boardwalk.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police are seeking help to find Salem Kibreab, aged 41, who was last seen in Silver Spring on June 10th—described as 5 ft 7 in tall, weighing 180 pounds with brown eyes and black hair—and wearing a sweater in red, black and white; anyone with information should call the county police help line at 3012798000.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Police secured the scene on the 600 block of Blandford St. in Rockville after a homicide occurred Saturday morning—MCPD began investigating at 9:17 a.m. and said more details will be released.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s 26th annual Heritage Days Festival will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29, offering free tours, exhibits and live music about local history, art and outdoor fun. The festival will feature programs on topics such as the Civil War, railroads and African American communities — a chance to visit sites that are not usually open to the public.  The MoCo Show

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Limited- and moderate-income Pepco customers can receive up to $300 in a one-time energy relief grant as funds open for eligible account holders beginning early July—customers must have at least $250 in arrearages over the past 60 days. Pepco and the Salvation Army are working together to help those facing rising energy costs.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Douglas Rivera has been named MCPS High School Counselor of the Year after 10 years of service that included roles as a resource counselor and restorative justice coordinator. He mentors a counseling intern and leads programs like the Minority Scholars Program (supporting student success) at Wheaton.  The MoCo Show
  • Lindzy Davis was named the MCPS Elementary School Counselor of the Year by MCPS. At Flower Hill, she has led programs that reduced chronic absenteeism and suspension rates (from 65.6% to 81% attendance and a 50% drop in suspensions), helping the Title I school earn a four-star rating.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown joined 51 other state attorneys general by filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals to support a veteran’s request for full GI Bill benefits and the right to share them with family. He said Lieutenant Colonel Paul Yoon (a veteran with nearly 24 years of service) was blocked by the VA from transferring his benefits to his daughter (a move that contradicts a recent Supreme Court ruling).  The MoCo Show
