COMMUNITY NEWS

  • New data shows that homelessness in Montgomery County has risen as rising living costs, slow wage growth and cuts to key support programs leave more families at risk. Officials say the County Council will meet tomorrow to review the findings and consider more funds + new programs to help struggling residents.  FOX 5
  • The air conditioning at the county animal shelter shut off Monday due to a mechanical problem during a heat wave, and emergency foster homes were set up for the animals. It was repaired Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.—management still offers short-term fosters as the shelter remains over capacity.  Montgomery Community Media
  • The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center at 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd in Derwood restored its air conditioning after a motor failure forced an urgent call for temporary foster homes for 40 vulnerable animals. The Department of General Services fixed the system, and the shelter ended its emergency response + resumed normal operations.  The MoCo Show

  • MoMo Hub, a popular Nepalese dumpling restaurant that first opened in Clarksville in 2022, has launched a new stall at Commas Food Hall in Silver Spring—one of three food stalls available that serves dishes like chicken steamed Mo:Mo and Bara with options for halal, vegan, or vegetarian diets while earning high online ratings.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • Since May 21, the MCPD Summer Traffic Task Force and partner agencies conducted 454 traffic stops—resulting in 60 DUI arrests, 551 citations and 646 warnings—in a campaign that targeted high-risk times like prom season, graduations and summer holidays.  The MoCo Show
  • A 22-year-old Gaithersburg man was critically injured when he was struck by a bronze-colored vehicle on Dorsey Road near Aviation Boulevard in Hanover at 2:04 a.m. on June 21; police said the driver fled the scene and they are investigating the hit-and-run.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Board of Education will formally install its 47th Student Member—Anuva Maloo—on July 1 at 4:00 p.m. at 15 W. Gude Drive; Maloo, a junior at Montgomery Blair High School and class president, will begin her term with voting rights on key education matters and receive a college scholarship, volunteer hours, and a social studies credit.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Moore announced a hiring freeze—set to begin July 1—that will cut 150 open state jobs and save about $120 million from the personnel budget amid budget cuts for education and healthcare. He said he is working with unions to lessen the impact on current workers as state leaders approved more than $2 billion in cuts.  FOX 5
