COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Almost three years after an explosion in November 2022 at Potomac Oaks killed one person and injured several others, the St. Jour family returned to their rebuilt condo in Gaithersburg after years in hotels and rental apartments—beginning a fresh start amid lingering fears.  WTOP

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a collision at Shady Grove Road and Comprint Court in Gaithersburg on Thursday afternoon involving two vehicles — one of which was a dump truck as crews worked to clear blocked lanes.  The MoCo Show
  • On Tuesday at 4:15 p.m., Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a basement fire at 10 Brooks Avenue in Gaithersburg triggered by a lithium-ion battery explosion that caused about $200K in damage+displaced one resident, and 75 firefighters quickly controlled the blaze+HazMat teams safely removed remaining battery components.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County Police took two suspects into custody yesterday after a foot pursuit following an attempted traffic stop on a stolen Hyundai near Old Columbia Pike and Tech Rd in the Fairland area—both suspects sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Niche released its 2025 Best Public Middle Schools rankings using key numbers and reviews from students and parents—Howard County Public Schools was ranked number one among the 24 school systems while SAT/ACT scores were taken out. The study looked at test scores, graduation rates and teacher quality to show a shift away from test-based college admissions.  The MoCo Show
  • Vishagan Aranganathan from Kingsview Middle School in Germantown was named a Maryland state merit winner in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge on June 26—his project used AI-driven infrared imaging for early wildfire detection. He will begin his freshman year at Northwest High School in the fall.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials remind Gaithersburg residents that all fireworks, including sparklers and consumer-grade types, are illegal year-round for safety reasons (violators may face fines up to $1,000 or six months in jail) and advise that approved public displays are the only safe option (organized by licensed professionals).  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County law will ban the use of handheld, backpack, and walk-behind gas-powered leaf blowers on private and commercial property starting Tuesday, July 1 to reduce emissions, noise, and health risks, and violators will face a $500 fine. The county will offer rebates for electric models while Councilmember Gabe Albornoz has introduced a bill to allow seasonal exemptions for landscape professionals with a public hearing on July 15.  The MoCo Show
