A plaque honoring Charlotte Coffield was unveiled Thursday at Talbot Avenue Bridge to mark Montgomery County’s segregation history & celebrate her work in preserving local heritage.

Officials, residents and family members attended the dedication, and the plaque will later be embedded in the bridge.

The Brady Readery is a new veteran and woman-owned independent bookstore now open in Laytonsville at 6860 Olney-Laytonsville Road.

It offers new and affordable used books, board games and educational toys, with Story and Craft Hours and a free children’s lending library to boost literacy.

Burlington opened its new Montgomery Village store on Friday, June 26, and donated $5,000 to support Stedwick Elementary School.

Montgomery County Planning Board certified the FY2027 Annual School Test and assigned seven MCPS schools to UPP tiers starting July 1, 2026 in anticipation of overcrowding for the 2030-31 school year; the change follows revised school service areas approved by the Board of Education (per the Growth and Infrastructure Policy).

Montgomery County will require higher minimum wages effective Tuesday, July 1, with large employers raising rates to $18 per hour, mid-size to $16.50, and small employers to $15.95; officials estimate full-time employees will gain about $728, $1,040, and $936 more annually (reflecting a 2.0% Consumer Price Index increase).
