- ➤ Montgomery County’s Sydney Mednik from Potomac received the prestigious Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award from ESPN on July 13—she co-founded the non-profit Pass with Purpose to donate soccer uniforms to children in need and earned a $2,500 grant with a year-long leadership program. The varsity soccer player at Winston Churchill High, who has played since her freshman year, will begin her junior year this fall. The MoCo Show
- ➤ John Lyon, a cherished radio personality and community advocate, died on June 26 at 85 after a career that included 22 years at WMAL and 20 years with Montgomery County’s Victim Assistance Program. A visitation is held today from 2 to 4 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Silver Spring— a Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for July 15 at 11:30 a.m. The MoCo Show

- ➤ Chick-fil-A held a community meeting in Germantown to discuss a new restaurant in the Milestone area—located in the parking lot in front of Kohl’s off Ridge Rd—that would be the second in Germantown and is set to open as early as the first quarter of 2028 after submitting proposals to the county. The company also plans to build another location soon at the Clarksburg Outlets to help ease demand at its current restaurants. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Jerry’s Subs & Pizza, once a regional powerhouse known for its over-stuffed subs, has scaled back from over 100 locations to just three operating restaurants by mid-2025 using a simple menu and local charm. The decline followed a split among the original owners and a difficult lease renewal in Silver Spring, leaving outlets in Dunkirk, Solomons Island, and the Maryland House travel plaza on I-95. - ➤ Montgomery County native Kahlil Greene was named one of Time’s 100 Most Important People on the Internet and announced his upcoming book Hidden History on social media. The digital educator—known for his work on hidden history and social justice—credits early support from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington for helping shape his career. The MoCo Show

- ➤ Arctaris Impact Investors announced an equity investment in a $27 million plan to convert the former Hotel Silver Spring into 227 affordable housing units in downtown Silver Spring+ half of the units will be reserved for households earning up to 60% of the area median income. GoodHomes will lead the project with nonprofit Housing on Merit and support from Erie Insurance to help address the housing shortage. The MoCo Show

Helping those who live in our service area for free, who are low-income, with Food, Prescription Funding, & if you have an infant (s), you can get Infant Needs as well when you pick up food from our pantry, which they give based off family size. Also, we offer Transportation to those in our service area for those who are seniors, an adult with disabilities, or otherwise unable to take public transportation for rides to and from medical or social service agency appointment by either volunteer driver if any available or if not and its 10 miles or less than we can send via taxi which we would pay for except for a tip & can check if in our service area on our website at the link https://www.gaithersburghelp.org/service-area-map (put in your home address and see).
