ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a reported drowning at 7100 Blanchard Drive in Derwood on Thursday morning — firefighters found an adult male in cardiac arrest and tried aggressive CPR — but the man could not be revived. The MoCo Show

- ➤ Coming soon signage is up for Mirchi Dhaba at 18280 Contour Rd in Montgomery Village Plaza in Gaithersburg, set to replace Chopathi Indian Kitchen which closed earlier this year (the new restaurant comes from the owners of Royal Tandoor). It will offer North and South Indian street food with a lunch buffet and an artistic interior (opening date not yet announced). The MoCo Show
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Newly released video from Montgomery County shows detectives interrogating 45-year-old Eugene Gligor—whose DNA linked him to the 2001 murder of Leslie Preer—while he pleaded guilty in June 2024 and now awaits sentencing next month. FOX 5
- ➤ Montgomery County Police arrested two teenagers on July 22 for an attempted strong-arm carjacking on May 24 in the 8800 block of Rockville Pike in Bethesda—community members identified them from surveillance photos, and the suspects were charged with attempted carjacking, second degree assault, and conspiracy while detectives continue seeking the third suspect. - ➤ The Montgomery County Arts and Humanities Council began its first full cultural plan in over 20 years and opened a public survey to shape art and cultural spending— the survey is offered in seven languages and gives participants a chance to win $100. Montgomery Community Media
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Libraries will host Vinyl Day: Just for the Record on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library in Silver Spring—this free event will feature live DJ performances, hands-on workshops, and interactive exhibits with a keynote by DJ GI Joe to celebrate the cultural impact of vinyl records and hip-hop. - ➤ A proposed Native Plant Protection Act in Montgomery County would ban the sale of invasive bamboo and require landowners to control weeds taller than 12 inches near property boundaries, as Councilmember Evan Glass said bamboo can damage structures and native vegetation. Testifiers at Tuesday’s public hearing backed stronger measures for local habitats—while one attorney warned that enforcing the ban could raise removal costs. Montgomery Community Media
