- ➤ The Montgomery County Business Center in partnership with M&T Bank will launch a free Spanish-language Business Accelerator Program on August 4 for up to 30 eligible county-based entrepreneurs, offering seven weeks of training in critical areas like marketing, finance, and using AI tools. The program will end with a pitch competition where participants can win cash prizes for their business plans. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Signage is up for Fish Taco at The Shops of Potomac Valley in Gaithersburg at 12121 Darnestown Rd. The family-owned restaurant will serve Baja-inspired meals made with local ingredients at a space that once hosted a Wayback Burger and an AT&T store—its new location is expected to open at the end of the year or in early 2026. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A study by GOBankingRates showed that Maryland households need a median income of $101,652 to be considered middle class — the range runs from $67,768 to $203,304. The study used 2023 Census data and followed Pew Research Center’s guidelines — placing Maryland at the top for high middle class income thresholds. FOX 5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County schools finalized a new cell phone policy that will take effect this fall to reduce distractions and boost student focus. The guidelines require all students to keep their phones off and out of sight during class time – while high schoolers can use them at lunch and between classes, elementary and middle school students cannot use them at all. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On July 19, flash flooding brought quickly rising creeks with no serious injuries because 35 solar-powered sensors helped crews close roads and issue warnings. The county will install five new upcounty sensors by the end of this month—each costing about $5,000—to help crews act before water levels rise further. Montgomery Community Media
