CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County Police responded on Monday morning at 9:47 a.m. to a shooting at Lockwood Drive and New Hampshire Avenue—applying a tourniquet to a male victim while Montgomery County Fire and Rescue provided care—with no suspect information available.  The MoCo Show
  • Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police are asking for help finding Jeffrey Ratnofsky, a 44-year-old man with a cognitive disability who was last seen on Sunday, July 27 at around 7 a.m. in the 100 block of Halpine Road in Rockville—he is 5-feet-5-inches tall, weighs 215 lbs and has brown eyes and black hair while wearing a navy blue t-shirt, long black pants and black shoes.  The MoCo Show

ECONOMY NEWS

  • North Carolina is considering restrictions that could drop its blue crab harvest by 21%—these changes may make it harder for Maryland restaurants to get the crustaceans as state officials work to rebuild the stock by 2030.  WTOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Councilmember Evan Glass will introduce a bill today to ban vehicles from stopping in bike lanes in Montgomery County after nearly 60 cyclist crashes occurred this year. He met with bike safety advocates in North Bethesda—saying residents can call 311 to report obstructions and trigger fines—adding a clear rule to keep bike lanes safe.  Montgomery Community Media
  • At a July 21 Public Safety Committee meeting, Montgomery County Police detailed a new text survey for 911 callers to provide feedback on service—calls involving sexual assault and child abuse will be excluded to avoid re-traumatization. The pilot starts in early August and full implementation is planned by January 2026.  Montgomery Community Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s Team Senshi Karate earned 15 national medals+ 3 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze at the USA National Karate Championships held in Fort Worth, Texas from July 9 to 13, and they were the only Maryland team to compete among over 3,000 top athletes. Head Coach David Abraham praised the team’s skill and dedication, marking this achievement as a milestone for Maryland martial arts.  The MoCo Show
  • Silver Spring’s Zania Socka-Nguemen, a rising sophomore forward from Montgomery County, helped the United States win a gold medal at the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup in Brno, Czech Republic from July 12 to 20. The 6-foot-3 star (a Sidwell Friends alum and McDonald’s All-American) averaged strong defense and efficient shooting in seven games and has now committed to Indiana University.  The MoCo Show
  • A Montgomery County preseason preview shows that 3A West teams and the Poolesville Falcons in 2A will start official practices soon. The report details how teams like the Damascus Hornets, Northwood Gladiators, Rockville Rams and Watkins Mill Wolverines will adjust their rosters and coaching for a fresh start (each facing unique challenges).  The MoCo Show
