BUSINESS NEWS

  • King Arthur Baking Company will open its first Maryland store at the Shops at Wildwood — 10207 Old Georgetown Rd — on Saturday, August 2 after Indigo Octopus moved to Bethesda Row on June 28.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • A Florida man faced theft, conspiracy and obtaining property from a vulnerable adult after he allegedly defrauded an elderly Maryland woman out of $20,000 using a tech support scam and Montgomery County police arrested him on July 23 before releasing him on bond on July 24 - investigators suspect there may be additional victims in the region.  FOX 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Last week, the Montgomery County Council reviewed a revised MCPS Personal Mobile Devices policy that limits student cell phone use in class for elementary and middle schools — and allows limited use during breaks in high schools. Former teacher Alex Tsironis discussed the changes on FOX 5’s DMV Zone, and the new rules will take effect for the 2025/2026 school year.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 28, Attorney General Anthony G. Brown and 20 state attorneys general with the Governor of Kentucky filed a lawsuit in California against the USDA for asking states to hand over private SNAP data, arguing that it breaks federal privacy laws. The suit claims that the demand for personal details dating back five years risks cutting off critical funding for a program that has helped low-income families for 60 years.  The MoCo Show
  • On July 28, the Montgomery County Council rejected a bill that would have exempted landscape professionals from the gas leaf blower ban—Councilmember Gabe Albornoz said the decision would make the fall transition harder for them. The county law banned sales of gas-powered equipment on July 1, 2024 and prohibited their use from July 1, 2025, with violations now fined at $500.  The MoCo Show
