BUSINESS NEWS

  • AAA warned consumers today to be careful when buying cars because water damage from recent flooding may not show until later — buyers should check the VIN, Carfax report, and have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle.  FOX 5
  • Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront is expanding its dining and retail scene as Silver Diner’s new outdoor pergola—measuring 1,581 square feet—opened in June, while Spirit Halloween, Kareem’s Lebanese Kitchen and Koi Sushi are set to open soon. Recent additions from last year—Han Spot, Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls, TOUS Les JOURS and the Barge Dining Pier—offer more choices for locals and visitors.  The MoCo Show
  • ISAAC’s Poultry Market, which opened its Gaithersburg location in February 2023 and later expanded to Burtonsville, was honored when Chowhound named its Honey Butter Chicken Sandwich the best in Maryland on July 26—this award follows an earlier accolade from the Restaurant Association of Maryland and spotlights the unique flavor created by a fried chicken breast dipped in honey butter, topped with the restaurant’s signature sauce and dill pickles.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County detectives arrested 62-year-old Amir Jalil Ali from Laurel—Campbell's then-boyfriend—after re-examining the case of 24-year-old police officer Denna Fredericka Campbell who was fatally shot in her White Oak apartment in 1995; charges against him had been dropped two months after they were first filed.  Montgomery Community Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Saints Constantine + Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cloverly will host its annual Greek festival from September 5 to 7 with free admission and parking. Attendees will enjoy Greek food, live music and dance, a gyro eating contest and a raffle for a Mercedes GLB or $30,000 cash as proceeds benefit the Maryland Coalition of Families.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools will host its annual Back-to-School Fair on August 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Westfield Wheaton mall—free transportation from five high schools and family-friendly activities will help students and parents prepare for the school year.  The MoCo Show

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation installed 50 digital signs at busy stops like Bethesda, Germantown, Rockville, Shady Grove, Silver Spring and Twinbrook to show real-time bus arrivals. The county will add more signs later as part of its bus stop upgrades—helping riders know when to expect their bus.  The MoCo Show
  • Attorney General Anthony Brown announced a settlement that requires Probate Advance, LLC to pay nearly $2.7 million in restitution to Maryland residents and $275,000 to the Consumer Protection Division — the company must also stop offering inheritance-based cash advances in Maryland.  The MoCo Show
