BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sixty Vines is building a new restaurant in downtown Gaithersburg that will open mid-October—its location will serve wines on tap and vineyard-inspired dishes. The restaurant will offer shareable boards, small plates, and mains similar to its Foggy Bottom and Reston spots.  The MoCo Show
  • Neighbors Coffee opened on August 14th at 1101 Nelson Street in Woodley Gardens, where local couple Spencer and Lulu Trach turned the former bank into a coffee shop—offering indoor and outdoor seating, a walk-up window, and weekend treats from local bakers with plans to add breakfast sandwiches soon. The café is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and welcomes customers from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on other days.  The MoCo Show

CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives from Montgomery County Police asked the public to help find an 83-year-old man — Brand was last seen on August 13 at 10 a.m. in the 3100 block of Gracefield Rd wearing a navy blue sweater and khaki pants and was believed to be driving a silver Lexus ES350 with MD registration 8GK2117.  The MoCo Show

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery County native Ellen Gira was chosen as a Strathmore Artist in Residence—she is one of six musicians selected for the program that supports early career artists. She will debut at the Fresh AIR performance on Nov. 12—tickets go on sale for Strathmore members on Aug. 25.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS updated its background screening process after a report found shortcomings since 2019 and is taking urgent steps such as hiring extra staff, re-fingerprinting older employees, and issuing new badges—measures that ensure no unscreened worker is left with students. The system will provide additional updates to the Board of Education on Sept. 25 and to the County Council on Sept. 26.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Public Schools held a Superintendent’s A&S meeting where former NFL player Colin Kaepernick spoke about social justice—while Anurupa Ganguly shared ideas to make STEM learning more engaging using virtual reality. Both speakers aimed to inspire school leaders with their fresh approaches.  The MoCo Show

  • Pilar Sanders cheered on her son Shilo Sanders during his preseason debut with the Buccaneers, wearing a custom '28' outfit from Passion For Ezra— a Montgomery County business co-owned by Gaithersburg-raised Monica and Taylor Blakely.  The MoCo Show
