- ➤ Two Maryland restaurants were named to Yelp’s Top 100 Sandwich Shops list in honor of National Sandwich Month; Full On Craft Eats and Drinks ranked 44 and Ekiben ranked 35—Ekiben, which has a Gaithersburg native as a founder, will soon open its first location outside Baltimore in Frederick. - ➤ George Galiachatos, owner of The Lincoln Charcoal Inn, died at 89 and was known for his work in both restaurants and real estate. A funeral service is scheduled at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church on August 20th—visitors will be received at 9 a.m. before a liturgy at 10 a.m. The MoCo Show

- ➤ Markoff's Haunted Forest will return for its 33rd season on October 3rd in Dickerson—featuring mandatory actor training by Allen and Shannon Hopps—and promises fresh spooky experiences for fans. - ➤ County officials from MCDOT and Montgomery County Police Department told residents to plan extra travel time and watch for school buses and children as nearly 160,000 students return to 211 schools on August 26 — school bus cameras will fine drivers who illegally pass stopped buses. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On August 15, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General recovered about $520 million in suspected fraudulent unemployment payments for Maryland in a team effort with the Employment and Training Administration and Maryland Department of Labor—money that will be split between Maryland and the federal government. - ➤ Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will host a free Emergency Preparedness and Public Safety Fair on Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wheaton Local Park in Silver Spring—offering CPR training, AED demos and family activities to help residents learn how to stay safe. - ➤ MCPS urged students and families on August 15 to store guns safely, noting that safe storage—locked, unloaded, with ammunition stored separately—has reduced accidental injuries among children. AH’HAAN will open on Sunday, August 17th at 237 Kentlands Blvd. in Gaithersburg, bartaco will begin construction with a liquor license hearing later this month at Pike & Rose, California Fish Grill in Rockville received a $650K permit with a fall opening planned, Marathon Deli in Kensington has been cleared to start interior work and may open later this year, and Olney Ale House in Olney hopes to open by summer’s end.
