CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday, Montgomery County Circuit Court sentenced Edgard Castro-Contreras of MS-13 to life plus 52 years for fatally shooting Edvin Agustin Leon and attempting to kill a second victim in a gang-related shooting at Northwest Stream Valley Park near the 9000 block of Piney Branch Road in Gaithersburg—authorities said he fired the fatal shot as investigations continue with pending trials for other defendants.  The MoCo Show
  • MS-13 gang member Edgard Castro-Contreras was sentenced on Monday (August 19) to life in prison plus 52 years for killing 20-year-old Edvin Agustin Leon in a gang-related shooting in Gaithersburg in 2022.  FOX 5
  • Detectives from Montgomery County Police Special Victims Investigations Division ask for help in finding 14-year-old Mattheus Pietro Costa, who was last seen on August 16th in the 1800 block of Cross Country Lane in Gaithersburg; he is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 160 lbs, has red hair and brown eyes, wore blue jeans, a black shirt and white and black Adidas shoes, and anyone with information should call 301-279-8000.  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools is preparing for the 2025-26 school year as teachers returned ahead of Aug. 26 after concerns were raised over missing background checks for 4,900 employees and outdated criminal checks for 12,000 workers. The system announced changes to grading policies, cell phone rules, and student conduct along with redistricting plans—public feedback on new school boundaries will be sought in September.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller honored 12-year-old Aasish Selvaraj of Potomac with a Governor’s Citation for heroically saving himself—his nanny and her young son when flash floods swept their SUV off the road near Bradley Boulevard and Holly Mercy Lane on July 31.  Montgomery Community Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Four Montgomery County high school girls' flag football teams from Wheaton, Paint Branch, Seneca Valley and Walter Johnson scrimmaged Monday night at the Washington Commanders-Cincinnati Bengals preseason game at Northwest Stadium in Landover—over 55,000 fans watched the event on ESPN's Monday Night Football.
