Sheetz opened its second Gaithersburg location on Thursday, Aug.
20 at Walnut Hill Shopping Center (16529 South Frederick Avenue). The grand opening featured a ribbon-cutting, giveaways and a $2,500 contest while customers donating non-perishables to Capital Area Food Bank received a branded bag.
🎓 Education
The Montgomery County Board of Education approved new administrative appointments on Aug.
20, naming six leaders to roles at local schools (including Peter V. Crable, formerly of Sligo Middle School). The board’s move aligns educators with improved operational and curriculum support.
Back-to-school safety tips from the FBI + American Red Cross help Gaithersburg parents guide students on travel rules, online security, and emergency procedures for the new school year.
The guide advises memorizing emergency contacts and following safe routes to school.
Montgomery County leaders submitted a joint public comment opposing federal changes to Head Start that would weaken staffing, instructional time, multilingual education, and parent involvement.
They said the proposal jeopardizes key elements of the program serving nearly 1,000 children.
🏛️ Government
Montgomery County Department of Transportation will offer low-cost adult bike classes + free e-scooter sessions at nine community locations this fall.
The courses begin Sept. 12 in Rockville and continue through mid-November, with registration required for bike classes and drop-in e-scooter sessions available.
Montgomery County finished road safety work ahead of the new school year, completing eight spot safety projects and three sidewalk renovations near local schools.
Montgomery Village Avenue upgrades, including repaving, curbs and a new traffic signal, are nearly done (some crossing beacons remain) to boost safety for drivers and pedestrians.
Montgomery County Councilmember Dawn Luedtke will host a community meeting addressing social and safety needs at South Lake Elementary School (18201 Contour Rd.) Thursday, Aug.
27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Local law enforcement, health representatives, and elected officials will join to listen and answer questions.

Montgomery County will host its annual International Overdose Awareness Day and National Recovery Month event on Saturday, Aug.
29, at Memorial Plaza in Rockville. The event will feature a Color for a Cause 1-mile Run/Walk/Roll, free tours and community tents with health and recovery resources (registration is online).
A 10-year-old girl was bitten by a beaver at Seneca Creek State Park on Aug.
13 near Berryville Road, and officials confirmed a dead beaver found Aug. 17 tested rabid; one mile of trail + river access points are closed as teams search for more sick animals.

Montgomery County housing inventory grew as 961 new listings emerged in July, leading homes to spend an average of 30 days on the market (GCAAR reports).
The median sold price dipped slightly to $656,000 despite overall strong sale figures.
