  • Joseph Hooks of Montgomery Village, who founded the 480 Club to mentor local youth, joined a Brookings Institution panel discussion yesterday to talk about well-being for Black men and boys—he spoke about his work with school and after-school programs that help students learn and grow. The event was broadcast live on C-SPAN and highlighted his commitment to community support.  The MoCo Show

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bao Bei, a finalist on Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race, will open its first restaurant in Rockville on Aug. 27 at Federal Realty’s Montrose Crossing—next to Kosmo Nail Bar. Montgomery County native Kevin Hsieh said the restaurant will serve Taiwanese bao sandwiches, steamed dumplings, bowls and sweet treats.  WTOP
  • Business owner Hussian Al Saadi, a Northwest High School graduate, upgraded a couple’s car rental from a 2012 Rolls Royce Ghost to a 2022 Rolls Royce Cullinan after learning that Patrick O’Boyle’s wife, Molly, faces terminal breast cancer and wants to check items off her bucket list. He also gifted them an extra day with the vehicle and a bouquet of roses (MySugarExotics) (Cullinan).  The MoCo Show

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This summer’s rain, heat and humidity caused mold to grow in several Montgomery County Public Schools. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor said cleaning and repairs are underway at schools including Goshen Elementary where a parent reported seeing mold on classrooms and teachers falling ill.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Seneca Valley High School has hired a new music teacher, Mr. Gage, who introduced himself with an exciting music video that mixes a soft tune with a loud metal riff. He taught at Neelsville Middle School for six years and will use nearly 20 years of experience to help students learn music theory and performance—setting a creative tone for the school year.  The MoCo Show

  • The Maryland Department of Health confirmed today that an adult in Central Maryland tested positive for West Nile virus, the state's first human case this year, and is now recovering. Health officials advise residents to remove standing water—this measure helps reduce mosquito breeding.  The MoCo Show
