CRIME NEWS

  • Gaithersburg police officers will not be charged after the Dec. 24 custody death of Marvin Salamanca Garcia, 35, as Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said his office's investigation found no crime was committed—despite evidence that factors like Garcia’s medical issues and intoxication contributed to his death.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS announced new rules for grading, behavior, cell phone use, and safety for nearly 160,000 students in the upcoming 2025-2026 school year — the district will add more staff for special education, security, and English learners and introduce a new Transition Day program to help students adjust to their new schools.  The MoCo Show
  • Montgomery County Public Schools produced a video with staff, students and Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor to mark the end of summer break—more than 160,000 students are reminded that a new school year is beginning.  Montgomery Community Media

  • The Advisory Commission on Policing will hold a public forum on September 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County Council Office Building — 100 Maryland Ave in Rockville to present its work and gather community feedback on public safety without advance registration.  The MoCo Show

  • The American Red Cross said every 30 seconds someone in the US needs platelets to help clot blood and donor Al Whitney visited Maryland to boost his mission of donating platelets in all 50 states—he has donated 1,157 units so far.  Montgomery Community Media
