ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A crash involving five vehicles occurred on southbound I-270 between Watkins Mill Road and Montgomery Village Avenue early yesterday morning and three left lanes closed—delaying traffic on the first day of school and prompting authorities to advise motorists to use alternate routes. - ➤ Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police — Special Victims Investigations Division ask for help finding missing 17-year-old Cheickousmane Maiga, who was last seen on August 20 at about 3:30 p.m. in the 24000 block of Newbury Rd in Gaithersburg, is 6-feet tall, has black hair and brown eyes, and wore black sweatpants, a gray shirt, a black hat, and crocs. - ➤ A gunman shot two people near Seneca Valley High School on Tuesday morning, causing four Montgomery County schools to go into lockdown as police treated the victims for non-life-threatening injuries and continued searching for the suspect—who remains at large. FOX 5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ MCPS students showed important growth in statewide testing today, with 57% earning proficiency compared to the 50.8% state average and math scores rising by 2.9% from last year—improvements were seen in 12 of 16 tested areas across elementary, middle, and high schools. - ➤ C2 Education’s Class of 2025 achieved a 94% college acceptance rate to top universities using strong test prep and tutoring—students averaged 1361 on the SAT and earned nearly $22 million in scholarships as they prepare for the new school year. The MoCo Show
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools started the new school year with a back-to-school kickoff and introduced a new cellphone rule+ elementary and middle school students must keep devices off during class while high school students may use them at lunch and between classes. - ➤ The Montgomery County Department of Transportation announced schedule changes for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1—Ride On buses will run on a Sunday schedule, free parking will be offered at Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Wheaton, and there will be no MARC Train service while MTA Commuter Bus service remains limited. - ➤ On August 25, 2025, the Gaithersburg Board of Supervisors of Elections certified the candidacies for Mayor—Jud Ashman and Tiffany Kelly—and City Council—Lisa Henderson, Jim McNulty, Chris Thoms and Omodamola Williams—for the November 4 election. Registered voters will receive mail-in ballot applications on September 5 and may vote at the Activity Center on Bohrer Park during Early Voting on October 26 and on Election Day. The MoCo Show
